The U.K. government’s acceptance of China’s plan for limiting free elections in its former colony of Hong Kong is a “great insult,” said the city’s former chief secretary.

Anson Chan:

“What’s happening in Hong Kong and the way Beijing is treating Hong Kong are inconvenient truths that the British government would rather ignore.”

Martin Lee: 

“The British government policy in Hong Kong can be summarized in three words: More China trade.”

Hong Kong’s ‘Illegal’ Democracy Poll Draws 700,000 Voters

More than 700,000 Hong Kong people have voted after the third day of a democracy poll that China says is illegal, dwarfing the most-optimistic forecasts by organizers.

The unofficial 10-day referendum on how to select Hong Kong’s top leader is organized by Occupy Central with Love and Peace, a protest group that plans to hold a sit-in in the city’s financial district if electoral reforms don’t meet its demands. The turnout, consisting mostly of electronic ballots, equals about 19 percent of registered voters and was more than twice the organizers’ highest forecasts of 300,000.

Is This the Death of Hong Kong?

Perhaps rumors of Hong Kong‘s demise weren’t exaggerated after all.

Nineteen years ago this month, Fortune ran its infamous “Death of Hong Kong” cover. By 2007, the magazine had changed its tune, deciding, in the Mark Twain sense, that it had been “wrong” and that “reports of Hong Kong’s death have been greatly exaggerated.” Given recent events, however, Fortune’s initial prediction that Beijing’s meddling would cost Hong Kong its pivotal role in the world may have been spot on.
